"Something smells amazing, and I know this guy had nothing to do with it," Tad jabbed a thumb at me.

"Hey, I helped!" I said, pretending to be offended. "I, uh…"

"Made me a gin and tonic when I was swearing at the pastry," Tessa finished. "Without that, I would have thrown the whole bloody thing out the window. It was a team effort."

"Well, I'd like a gin and tonic, even if I'm not about to throw anything out of the window," Tad said, taking Benji from the carrier strapped to his front and carefully placing him in the pop-up highchair that Alice had set up. "How about you, babe?"

"I've been ready since this morning," Alice said, letting out a sigh and sitting down heavily. Alice was tattooed, blonde, and always sported immaculate winged eyeliner, despite the dark circles under her eyes. "Teething is not okay."

"He looks happy now," I said cautiously, bending down to my godson's level. "Show me your chompers, Benji." Benji, however, reached for my nose, his adorable chubby fingers pinching me and surprisingly sharp baby nails cutting in. "Ow!" I stood up. "I'm going to make those drinks. Safer than trying to bond with my godson."

"Are you okay?" Tessa looked up at me with concern.

"I think I can just about cope with being manhandled by a baby," I said, even though my nose was stinging. "And even if I couldn't, I'd have to pretend I was for the sake of my masculine ego."

"Ah, masculinity so fragile," Alice sighed.

"You'll have to talk to my sister Abby about that. Her second favourite hobby is puncturing over-inflated male egos. She's very good at it."

"What's her favourite hobby?"

"Giving me and Michelle advice whether we ask for it or not. It's a big sister thing, I guess."

"I get that," Alice said thoughtfully. "I've got a little sister. I just can't help myself when it comes to the unsolicited life advice."

"This is where I'm glad I'm an only child," I said, looking up from the pieces of cucumber and lime I was cutting, according to the drinker's preference. "Okay, here we go. Mother's ruin. Sorry, Alice."

"Mother is ready to be ruined tonight." Alice picked up her glass and took a greedy gulp. "Oh, sweet baby Jesus that tastes good. I still haven't recovered from when I was pregnant, and Tad thought it would be a good idea to visit a craft brewery. I couldn't even taste anything and had to drive his drunk arse home."

"That was not my finest hour," Tad admitted, rubbing his face with his hands. "Lucky you're a kind, forgiving wife and didn't punish me harshly for it. Except in the way I like." He winked at his wife, who mimed lashing him with an invisible whip. I could see Tessa hiding her own grin behind her hand. Our eyes met, and she began to laugh again.

We were saved from having to comment on Tad and Alice's bedroom dynamics by the sound of the doorbell.

"That will be Abby." Tessa made for the door.
